Village of Postville
Albro CROWEL, who settled in 1841, built the first house in Postville. The growing corners began to assume the appearance of a village in about 1858 when Gilbert POST moved in from the prairie and commenced trade here. Mr. Post erected a building for a residence and store under the same roof. The property for many years has been known as the Postville Hotel and in 1884 was owned by Hiram GABRIEL. Dr. A. L. DAY opened a drug store in the spring of 1867.
A large well built and well furnished cheese factory was built and put into operation in Postville in 1874.
Other early settlers of Postville were Thomas MITCHELL, Dr. RUNDLET, and Peter OLSON. Mr. RATHBURN had a cabinet shop here in the early days. Mr. FELLOWS was the first wagon maker and repairer.
The Methodist and the Free-Will Baptist both built churches in Postville in 1868.
