Mount Pleasant Township

The town of Mount Pleasant was organized in April 1849. It comprises congressional township 3 north, range 8 east, of the fourth principal meridian. It is bounded on the north by the town of Exeter, on the east by Albany, on the west by Washington, and on the south by Sylvester.

As early as 1837, Henry MITCHELL was living in a log cabin on section 9 where he did some land breaking. about that same time, Elias LUTHERELL entered land on the north half of section 28. Others to settle were: Justus SUTHERLAND, A. F. STEADMAN, Archibald and Prosa WHALEY, John TROY, the McNUTT brothers - John, Benjamin and Daniel, Pliny COLTON, Christopher SILVER and others.

In June 1844, a man named Arthur SMITH was murdered and buried on the STEADMAN farm, but was later removed to the Monticello cemetery.

The first death was that of Samantha, daughter of A. F. and Patty STEADMAN in 1841 and was buried on the STEADMAN farm.

The first burial place was that of the STEADMAN farm where 6 bodies were interred. One has since been removed and five remain, however, there is nothing to mark the spot.

There were also a few bodies buried in the southwest quarter of section 6. The first being a daughter of David SMITH.
