Exeter Township

Congressional township 4 north, range 8 east, of the fourth principal meridian, comprises the civil town, Exeter. It is bounded on the north by Dane county, on the east by the town of Brooklyn, on the south be the town of Mt Pleasant, and on the west by New Glarus. The town was organized in 1849.

The first man to make permanent settlement in this town and the county was William DEVIESE, coming in 1828. Other settlers who soon joined him were: John DOUGHTERY, Hollis CROCKER, Pierce BRADLEY, James SLATER, James HAWTHORNE,and Edward D. BEOCHARD.

The first birth was that of Louisa, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William WALLACE born 07 Aug 1830.

The first marriages were John CAMPBELL to Elizabeth DURGIN in 1843 and shortly after Dr. STEARNS married Charlotte DURGIN.

The first death of a white man was that of the miner BONER who was killed by McNUTT in 1828.
