Village of Dayton
Dayton is located in Exeter Township.
The village of Dayton was platted in August 1853 by P. P. HAVENS, the plat being situated on the northeast quarter of section 14.
The first settlers of Dayton were the members of the LEWIS family. Mahlon LEWIS came in 1844. Mahlon Lewis' mother, a widow, came in 1845. She had a family of two girls and three sons besides Mahlon. Eunice, the oldest girl, married Ansil FILTS. Abigail, the other girl, married Mr. CROOK.
A. D. KIRKPATRICK, who came in 1852, gave the name of Dayton to the Village, from Dayton, Ohio.
The first physician was Dr. J. B. ORMSBY, who located here in 1854.
A post office was established in September 1854 and the first postmaster was George DUNCAN.
Other early settlers were Dr. LYSAGHT, Mr. LELAND, Joseph GREEN, James NORRIS, Thomas GRACY, John PACE, Alfred GATTIKER and Nick GRUIDENWISE.
The Methodist church was erected in 1868 with Elder RUSSELL as first pastor. The Presbyterian church was also built in 1868 with Elder NEWELL as the first pastor. The Catholic church was build in 1869.
